Dave has rung and said Benji has settled in really well and has made himself at home.  He slept on the bed last night, and has been like a little whirlwind playing with his new toys.  They adore him .

Has now decided he prefers sleeping on the sheepskin cushion bed next to the bed ( he 2 beds and 3 cushions beds around the house) doesn't like the igloo bed.

Night before last I had gone up and he was sleeping on the cushion gay was watching the end of a prog.

On the prog there was a loud knock on the door , whoooosh he was at the top of the stairs barking like mad, front legs spread ( typical terrier)  barking and running back into me to come and see what it was.

Up I get dressing gown on by which time he as at the door barking , let him out, checked out the path from  gate to steps than ran up steps and checked out the garden, (after waiting for me to come up the steps) comes back in AND BEFORE I HAVE EVEN LOCKED THE DOOR  he is back on his cushion asleep.

What a boy.

Benji has just passed his GSCE A levels in Human Control.!!!

Lying in bed the other night, he is on his sheepskin 1/2 asleep. Gay downstairs watching the end of a prog, he gets up goes to the top of the stairs barks twice, nothing happens so he goes downstairs, he put his head around the corner of the settee looked at her barked twice and came back to bed.

She said with his look it was a clear command are you tuning that off and coming to bed!

Hi all,

went over the field yesterday was sat over the far end by clump the rushes and spotted my daughter at the top of the bank, she called benji, I slipped his lead and away he went, ooops stops looked back for dad, ain't that fast mate.

daughter calls him again and away he goes, as he gets nearer listen to the coughing that  he does when breathless or excited and usually when he wakes up.

Someone did say it was normal for yorkies but just wanted to check with a recording, and give you all another chance to see Beni again

:)Hi Dave lovely to see him soooo happy with you. It's a bit hard to be sure but to me it sounds the same as Oscar had, that was a collapsing Trachea, he already had the start of it when I had him from the RSPCA at 2yrs old, he passed away recently at 13yrs old, he had been on an inhaler for about 3yrs, he was worse when excited etc, does it sound just like Kennel cough even though it may not be?, do you use a harness as just a lead puts pressure on his neck?, a check-up with the vet would be best in case Benjy needs any medication, please keep in touch & let us know how our munchkin's getting along. :-* :-* :-* :-* :-* :-*
Title: Re: BENJI 6 year old Yorkie - Rehomed
Post by: terrier989 on June 25, 2016, 22:00:04 PM
Vet looked at it when i took him a few  months back, but couldn't get him to do it, if you look at the video you will see a nice wide soft neck band on the harness.

going to try and get vids of him doing it around the house then go back to vet, it is definitely worse and some times he coughs up something but swallows it, after drinking he sometimes coughs up water as if he has drunk too much too fast.

However in himself he is coming on great had a 1st yesterday. sat on the deck having a break from DIY, he wanted  to see my stuff on the table so i put him on the chair next to me and put my leg across the front to stop him jumping down, he stepped onto my thigh walked up and sat on my lap, did it twice more later.

A fab little fella

:-[ I must go to Specsavers ;), there's a little test that our vets do to promote a cough, they touch/press a place by or below the Adams apple, a video is a great idea as dogs don't always "perform" at the vets ::).
Soooo pleased he's a happy chappy & enjoying life with you.xxxxxxxx

Hi Dave  He is looking great and so happy and running very fast, he is a little character.  Why don't you take the video to the vets of him running to your daughter see what they say.
Title: Re: BENJI 6 year old Yorkie - Rehomed
Post by: terrier989 on June 28, 2016, 19:43:38 PM
I want one of a coughing spell when he has been sitting /lying quietly, he will get up and start coughing as if he is choking/clearing his throat, front paws bent head down and is definitely coughing something up but he always swallows it, unless just had a drink the its water and that comes out, I am wondering if without is teeth he is taking some bits of food down his wind pipe, you can hear him rattling/wheezing sometimes.

he is fine in himself eating, walking sleeping etc so I am happy to wait, until I get a video of each instance to help the vet

thanks all for help

Been to the vets he has had xrays, unfortunately he has an enlarged heart, going on to meds and a mild sedative for life to stop him, going hyper. Just have to hope this gives enough help to live a reasonable number of years more, because he such a little darling. vet says he is highly active so the disease is not affecting him a great deal just his breathing when he gets hyper.

Had a nice walk along the afon lido this week will post some piccies later

thanks folks,

he is having a CT scan in abt 2 weeks to ensure he is on the best medication for his condition, can basically carry on as he is but some how we have to control his hyper excitement periods, once he is stabilised possibly a neuro calmer, but in the meantime just homeopathic like spot on calmer, fingers crossed the scan gives us more accurate diagnosis for meds.

Tbh right now ot
her than the cough there are no other symptoms remember his rnning video  :)

here is a collage of wednesday's walk down the afon lido with benji & daughter Hannah

walked down the bank from boating lake to the road bridge by Burtons biscuits (it's a bugger the smell of cooking biccys)

top left is as far down as we walked through the wooded area, above us is the road bridge and behind that is the old railway bridge.
bottom left me and benji resting by bridge supports ( hannahs bag by the way not mine)
Bottom right taken from same sot looking back upstream
Bottom middle Benji saying to Hannah where have you been.

got back to car then walked into boating lake to have a coffee and the squirrel jumped up onto the wall
top right is the kiddies boating pool and Benji discovering ducks can fun

no chance of catching them, if you look very closely you will see his lead going towards bottom left corner.

My last dog (cairn), when she was a pup chased some canada goose gosling into the main boating lake from the path, as we walked along mum goose came running up behind her am pecked her backside and kept doing it.

left a lasting impression on her, once sh had grown up sha had a simple motto, ducks in the water dogs on the path.

:) :) :) :) It's funny how an experience in puphood can stick in their mind, when we 1st had Ruby as a pup there was a football match on TV, lots of shouting & jumping about here, she was terrified & still starts shaking when footie comes on, we had to go to the pub to watch Wales lately as we knew we couldn't sit there quietly ::).xx

Benji's had a haircut.

he is much better on the meds doesn't have that hoopy type cough when he wakes up (especially in the morning) does hoop when very excited and after drinking he coughs but that is different in sound, I think because he has all his teeth out except canines, when he drinks he breaths some water in he definitely coughs it out. Still waiting a cardio scan.

Hi

His scan has had to bw delayed due to the specialist impending nuptials ( did point out didn't think that was as important as his scan :-)).

So we had the heart biomarker test done.

The results are graded, lowest grade of concern is 900 which says " the risk that the clinical symptoms you are trying to diagnose are due to heart disease is very low"

Benji's reading was 250 which is great news. So he is off heart tablets and ongoing work/meds will be towards lung and/or  trachea being problem

:) :) :) :) :) :) :) Yay great news for you Benjy, please let us know how he goes, my Oscar had a collapsing trachea when I had him at 2yrs old (From the RSPCA who hadn't spotted it ::)), he was fine until he was about 9yrs old, had  few lots of steroids but then had an inhaler for 4yrs when he died of a heart attack so hopefully there's many years ahead for adventures & love. :-* :-* :-* :-*

Hi all,

Ok he he has been to Longford, he was down for  fluoroscopy (magic moving xray), a treacheaoscopy ( camera down his trachea) and possible a CT scan

He had the fluoroscopy on Monday and was due the trachea one Tuesday only having CT if the others didn't work.

Vet rang me Monday night to say 1st one went well and he had a meeting scheduled with his consultant(boss) and some medical based vets (he is surgical based) Tuesday morning to look at the results. At that time he said benji was out of his kennel and running round playing with the staff.

Rang me Tuesday midday to say i could collect him, the results of test one were clear enough they didn't need to do more.

He suffers a minor collapse of the trachea at each end but it does not warrant surgery at this stage, I have to increase his daily exercise with small walks (still keep his bigger one) in order to lose 1/2 kilo down to 3.8k, also keep him out of my den/office when I am smoking even if window open. If in 14 days no sign of improvement he will go onto a cough inhibiting drug which they will import from USA.

In the distant future he may need a stent and I learnt there are two sorts and internal  mesh type stent (one at each end) or an external one at each end which goes around the outside trachea and  is attached to it, it then expands to pull it open but that involves major surgery, at the moment he would be ok on the internal one. all very interesting.

So all in all it is a good outcome, and benji happy to be home again, just as we are to have him home

Let me just say the vets, hospital and care of your pet and you are absolutely superb, if your pet has any problems and needs referral please don't hesitate to use them. There was an initial 1hr consultation where the surgeon asked all the questions, then explained their course of action and 30m where I asked all the question and he went to great lengths to explain each procedure and the purpose, very re-assuring.

When I collected him there was a good 30m debrief to ensure i was happy with and understood all the instructions and why, BTW I did ask if they treated two legged animals (other than birds) ie us.

Dave, Gay & benji

will try and put some more photos soon.

Wow I found that fascinating reading having gone through it with Oscar & now Ben, as smokers ourselves we did stop smoking indoors about 5yrs ago, recently we were away in the camper & as Oscar no longer with us & it was raining we thought it would be ok to smoke inside, poor Ben nearly choked so it was proof that a smokey environment really is bad for them ( I even tried sitting on the back step but Ben still choked as the smoke was blowing back into the van ::)), when we 1st enquired about treatment for Oscar (about 10yrs ago) the stent wasn't really recomended only pallitive care ( steroid boosters & an inhaler) so it shows how things have advanced.
Hopefully now Benji will be a happy, healthy boy who can really enjoy his adventures, please give him a HOOOOGE hug & kisses from us Yorkie fanatics. :-* :-* :-* :-* :-* :-* :-* :-* :-* :-* :-*

Dizzy, he gets lots of hugs everyday but he will get one from you.

Maggie yep medicine moves one, it is an experience to go there, they have the time (you pay for it) to spend with you not run off their feet like the local vets are, and thank you for your bit on smoking experience, yes they said there are irritants in the smoke and residue in a smoking area can trigger it not just the smoke, going to need to buy a big brolly or pack it in again, did 3yrs on vaping really enjoyed it but they stopped producing my favourite flavour (stout) which I used at zero nictone, Tried others no joy will have to do so again

know what you mean after our start, been good for quite a while now, occasionally looks as if he is going too go red but a quick change of approach or a distraction move usually sorts it.

been huge changes this last  6 months, he is a loving little charmer, except if anyone goes to near to mumsie then he gets highly protective (or jealous).

Plays hell if I go out without him, stands in front of the door barking and pretending to block the exit, then sulks till I come back. If we both go out fine and runs all over us when we get back.

Had a grooming last week oh boy that was a 2 day sulk, but fine now.

we have to be careful on the stairs as you are likely to trip over more than one toy.

what a boy

when he wants your special attention, will sit a few feet away and every 30 secs give a  grunt until you look, when you look this is what you see

Benji went onto new meds  yesterday, have to get them imported from Oz,

What an instant result, cuut his coughing fits by 90%, doesn't cough when waking up (slowly or suddenly), coughs a few times if highly excited but nowhere like a coughing fit, event pulled to the end of his lead (cat) came to a sharp stop no coughing.

Still coughs after drinking unless the water is very shallow, I am convinced with only his canines he cannot control the water and ends up with some going down his windpipe because he always coughs up a little puddle.

So overall a great result and a more comfy doggy.

In case you have same problem, was originally going to go onto Lomatil but that now not available in UK, so he is on Lofenaxal

Hi,

think of him tomorrow going to vet for small operation.

he has 7-10 small skin tags but 2 have grown, one is quite raised like a jelly from a basin but is clean and skin pink, other is flat bit has expanded in area and the edges have small pustules which are weeping.

Going to have both off and biopsied fingers crossed.

I dread him in a lampshade he is too short to climb steps/stairs but have to dig the child gates out, and off course have to be careful he doesn't bump into things pushing the neck end into his trachea.

he is back home, they took off six, he is amazing, ate like horse when he got in, had a spot off difficultly getting up steps to garden and stairs because the treas  & risers are different dimensions but couple of goes and he cracked it. Not are all bothered by the lampshade.

there must be sanctuaries these wonderful dogs can go to I am devastated as an ex service man to know they put down so many faithful dogs.

Ah today was the day that the hood came off.

Oh boy when we got home he spent 20mins just liking his one paw, he looked so pleased then he spent another 20 mins running around rubbing each side of his face into the carpet whilst wagging his tail furiously.

Tried to have me and the vet when his stitches were coming out, bad news is we have found 2 they missed so its back again tomorrow for a quick visit.

He has a rough saturday, we found 2 stitches not removed took him to have the done, wasn't very happy going there again.

At11pm he went out garden came back in and the big wound on his flank had opened right up, diamond shape 1 1/4" by 3/4" of an inch had to go back up the vet for emergency treatment, they have stapled it this time, hope for his sake it holds, would have preferred glued because that would have been right along the wound.

fortunately doesn't need his light shade on as he can't/doesn't try to reach it. got to keep these in for 2-3 weeks as 10days was obviously to early for a skin stretch repair.

Had staples out today so far so good.

Got him home and later had a terrible coughing and wheezing fit, thought he was choking took him back up vets (had been coughing continuously for 20mins and was clearly distressed, stopped as soon as we entered the vets and wagged his tail, checked over fine and has been since (abt 10hrs ago)
