Title: Road Salt
Post by: honeymoo on January 20, 2013, 17:13:38 PM
WARNING....With the snow upon us the roads are now being gritted, if you walk your dog on gritted roads/paths please make sure that their paws are washed either by walking them through a few puddles away from the gritted surfaces or by dipping their feet in fresh water once at home.
WATCH TO SEE IF YOUR CATS ARE LICKING THEIR FEET A LOT. WHY ?
GRIT CONTAINS ANTI-FREEZE WHICH IS POISONOUS, ANTI-FREEZE TASTES SWEET TO DOGS AND CATS. CATS AND DOGS LIKE TO LICK THEIR FEET! ................pls copy n paste, n keep our fau babies safe !! x

This might be a stupid question but the bags of salt/grit you can buy from garden centres etc to use on paths at home, do they also contain antifreeze?

Does anyone know?

Im not sure but think it is best to err on the side of caution; to me if it does the same thing, then it will have.

I had never considered this until you mentioned it. We use bags of Hansons Rock salt from the builders merchants; I have just checked the bags and there is no mention of antifreeze as an additive. I will ring the company tomorrow to be sure.

I think the rock salt is a much safer option although that too can be harmful to dogs so best to keep their paws washed.

Have googled it. Apparently when dogs ingest rock salt it causes dehydration, liver failure and pancreatitus (sp!). It doesn't have to have anti freeze added to it to make it harmful.

Made me think. Thank you for posting x

I'd love to know if there was a pet-safe option, our garden paths, patio etc are lethal at the moment.

Just to say there's a bit of a debate on FB as to whether it actually does contain antifreeze but even if it doesn't it can be harmful to animals as posted above so we're going to leave the post up.

I've just read an article that says 'small stone' cat litter is very effective, expensive but safe
